| From a Mess to Success!
More and more Trusts have begun to use Lean methodology, to increase the amount of direct care time nursing staff spend with patients. Part of this approach includes the 5S process, which results in a ‘place for everything’ and‘everything in it’s place’.

The benefits of using a system such as this, is that by utilising a larger surface graphic, there is a minimised risk of the film peeling up and deteriorating under normal cleaning conditions, either by manual mopping and cleaning of the surface, or by the use of mechanised cleaning machinery. This provides a cost saving in the time taken by staff to mark out and maintain these areas, and of course the obvious visual management benefits which result in a reduction in wasted time for clinical staff trying to locate vital equipment.
Also, by utilising simple and standardised descriptive graphics, the actual production costs can be managed in a more effective manner, with a comprehensive range of predetermined images in the catalogue being more of a ‘generic’ image of a selected piece of equipment, rather than a photo image that ties the graphic to any particular ’brand’. With the multitude of equipment on any individual ward, that is typically supplied by several suppliers, it is impractical to have a ’shadow’ of each individual brand of equipment. The image of each piece of equipment is printed on the reverse side of the film, and this process ensures that the image does not fade or wear off, and gives a much more permanent and efficient solution to the problem.
